Balzarini Raffaella

I am a research engineer at Inria Research Center in Grenoble-France and PhD in geomatics and spatial analysis, specializing in environmental engineering. I have been teaching geomatics at the University Grenoble Alps for more than five years and I am involved in many innovative local projects. My area of activity mainly concerns the representation of geographic information and geo-visualization in Gis-based land-use suitability mapping

If the representation of geographic information issues is a key activity, I have significant knowledge of the problems of mountain areas. The case study for my PhD research concerned a site-search problem for a ski resort in the southern French Alps, depending on geomorphic, geographic and climatic constraints. I am currently working on the development of geographic information representation with ski resort digital tools. My involvement in the Italian Glaciology Commit-tee and with the AINEVA (Associazione Italiana Neve e Valanghe) has enriched my field experience. I have also prac-ticed what I preach, having been a ski instructor for several years. As a mountain professional, I am familiar with the socio-economic, territorial and environmental challenges this environment is facing.

  • QUALIFIED as Associate Professor of physical, human, economic, and regional geography
  • Ph.D. in environmental engineering and geomatics, University of Grenoble Alps, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble (LIG) and Esri France
  • Masters in territorial-development engineering and GIS, University of Grenoble Alps
  • Masters  in IT for communication and education, University of Grenoble Alps
  • Bachelors in Geo-sciences from the University of Earth Sciences, Turin (Italy)
